Another Day of Competing for Your Kids…

After spending the better half of the last few months with school district leaders from all over the Country, that message, "we are competing for our kids"  is unchanging.

Charter schools are becoming more and more prevalent across the Country. Dallas County has over 365 charter schools alone, one for every day of the year. Negative press is everywhere about how public schools are failing. We all know it isn’t true, and that our teachers work hard out there for our children.  Personally I don’t have anything against charter schools. My only concern is how they are affecting the infrastructure of education. The impact has been significant in some areas and it will only continue. They need to be held to the same standards as their counterparts.  More importantly, public school systems need better tools and support in order to compete effectively to keep their kids.

School districts are making leaps and bounds out there, but that isn’t the story that you are hearing. We are working to change that, one district at a time. I’ve made it my personal mission to talk about those kids who are doing amazing things at school each and every day, themselves and collaboratively with their peers. If we give them the tools, they will create. Our teachers are giving them the encouragement and support they need but are under appreciated and scrutinized by those who don’t understand how education works and the challenges that they face.

At Percussion my main focus is on helping School Districts to get the Good word out,  making a dent in the negative perceptions out there. Our kids hear the negative messaging and they don’t understand it. They know they love their school, their teachers and their friends.

Don’t be quick to judge, take a few seconds, thank a teacher and congratulate a student.  Trust me, every student out there has something they should be congratulated for.
